problems

  1. Keyboard

    • Until recently there wasn't a standard keyboard for typing Maltese. Now, we have the MSA 100 keyboard layout. However, it's not implemented on all systems.
    • In current systems punctuation is taken away to make Maltese letters. You can't type ?, {. etc without switching to English.

  2. Encoding

    • You can't send a file in Maltese to someone else - it gets all scrambled.
    • You're trying to view a web page, and you have to download yet another special font.
    • Word processors break up Maltese words or otherwise don't recognize them properly.
    • Worse still, you are typing a simple word like 'tieghi' and the computer insists on splitting it up to say 'tiegh I' !
    • Think "What's all this trouble, Don't we already have Maltese fonts?" Read this!

  3. Spellcheck

    • There is no spellchecker for Maltese, and so all of your words are underlined in red.

  4. Localization

    • The date and time don't come up in Maltese.
    • Menus and program screens don't come up in Maltese.
    • Maltese text doesn't sort properly ("ie" after "i", Maltese "gh" as one letter, etc.)

  5. Terminology

    • There aren't familiar or consistent words in Maltese to say what I need to say about technical subjects.
